Blurb

He had to see her again. He didn’t know why. He was a grown man now, no longer the lonely child he’d been in the past. And yet the breathtaking need remained the same, and every time he recalled that night the pain of separation was still as strong, still as raw has it had been. He knew it made no sense and yet he couldn’t deny it. No matter what others might say he had to meet her. And, deep inside his heart, he childishly hoped she’d be a little bit like him, that she’d be able to truly see and understand him. For what bound could be stronger than blood?

She dreamed of death every night and of freedom every morning. From her window she saw herself leave that place, run across the forest and escape the suffocating fate that awaited her. And yet she knew that the chains that bound her were needed and deserved. For she knew all too well the dark horror of who she truly was. And so she accepted her fate. Until a promise she couldn’t remember being made was fulfilled, and a Prophecy of blood and death never came to pass. And so maybe she could be free from those chains after all. Maybe there was still hope for her. Maybe she’d be strong enough to deny her true self and simply live.

Chapter 13 Departure - 8th day of Hanotë -   Part 4 - Making Mistakes They stopped at midday like always and Elipson quickly started unpacking since it was her turn to prepare their meal. The others went about their other tasks, like caring for the horses or looking for fresh water to refill their flasks. Lamar came back not long after with a few dry branches to start a fire. “Need any help?” he volunteered and she smiled back at him. “No need, thanks. Thanks to Mahel we’ll be having roast meat. So it’s no trouble at all,” she added, wishing Mahel would challenge his brother for hunting contests more often, and Lamar looked at the scenery around them. “Have you noticed all these abandoned fields? And how all the doors and windows close when we pass by? I don’t mean to sound negative but this doesn’t look good. It’s like everyone is really scared of something.” “Felt... read more ❯

Epilogue The city of Mithir greeted the new day plunged in deep, heavy, ominous silence. Seven days had passed since the departure of the Crown Prince, on his quest to find help in the Ice Mountains. And now that all evacuations had been successfully completed, more than half the population had left the city in search of refuge in the south, towards the Kingdom of Leips, leaving behind empty houses and depopulated streets. The city gates had been closed at dawn and reinforced with wood, stone and iron. And all the walls were patrolled by Knights with serious and alert countenances, their eyes fixed on the threatening horizon. They wore their armor, especially cleaned and polished as if the occasion were a honorable ceremony, and the atmosphere among the men was one of nervousness and high tension. The third outer wall had been equipped with various devices especially created to destroy the enemy’s... read more ❯

Chapter 13 Departure - 8th day of Hanotë -   Part 2 -Almost There Elian looked away from the window that had just been urgently shut and took a deep breath. “I wonder if they fear us because we’re strangers.” “Armed strangers, you mean,” Arkel pointed out. “How long till we reach Melkar?” Lamar asked Mahel who was, once more, with his nose stuck to one of his maps. “I’d say two, three days at most,” the young Knight replied. “Finally. Can’t wait to reach the Ice Mountains and be done with all of this!” Elian sighed even though, deep inside, he knew better. Things would hardly go as smoothly as they all hoped for.   Previous Chapter   Next Chapter read more ❯

Chapter 13 Departure - 8th day of Hanotë -   Part 5 -Deserted Kahor had decided to head South, hoping that they’d gather some new information as they crossed the smaller agricultural villages, and Selina had promptly agreed. The possibility of encountering men of the Northern Armies on the road should they travel closer to the Silver Forest scared her so much that she had hardly gotten any sleep, constantly dreaming about men with dark faces and hateful glowing eyes chasing after her, grabbing her, touching her … However the first villages they’d crossed that morning had been completely abandoned; the small, wooden houses with roofs made of straw and clay empty; their cringing doors left open as if their occupants had left in a hurry. The village where they were presently at was no exception, Selina thought in dismay as she peered into a house from one of the open windows and saw a table set... read more ❯
