* Denial *

in The Gemstone of Ominium Book 1 - Denial

He had to see her again. He didn’t know why. He was a grown man now, no longer the lonely child he’d been in the past. And yet the breathtaking need remained the same, and every time he recalled that night the pain of separation was still as strong, still as raw has it had been. He knew it made no sense and yet he couldn’t deny it. No matter what others might say he had to meet her. And, deep inside his heart, he childishly hoped she’d be a little bit like him, that she’d be able to truly see and understand him. For what bound could be stronger than blood?

She dreamed of death every night and of freedom every morning. From her window she saw herself leave that place, run across the forest and escape the suffocating fate that awaited her. And yet she knew that the chains that bound her were needed and deserved. For she knew all too well the dark horror of who she truly was. And so she accepted her fate. Until a promise she couldn’t remember being made was fulfilled, and a Prophecy of blood and death never came to pass. And so maybe she could be free from those chains after all. Maybe there was still hope for her. Maybe she’d be strong enough to deny her true self and simply live.

  Chapter 9 The Return Part 8 - Last Sweep “I’m truly sorry but I won’t leave and that’s final! I’m only leaving here with the Princess!” Denar took a deep breath trying hard to keep what was left of his patient intact and Heric ordered to group to leave. “Hey! Why did you do that?” “It’s no use losing time over foolish arguments. Dana will leave when we do, and that’s that. Let’s just get over with this and sweep the city to see if no one’s left behind. I’ll go north, you go south.” Denar was about to protest to his all mighty posture when Elipson walked right past him. “I’ll go with you,” she told Heric, who immediately started laughing out loud. “You can’t be serious!” he protested but Elipson ignored him walking towards the city. “Are you listening to me? I’m not taking no damn woman with me!” Denar was about to do something rash and probably... read more ❯

  Chapter 9 The Return Part 7 - Give it to Me! Allana ran. Somewhere behind her she could hear someone call her name but right then she wouldn’t stop for anything. She couldn’t stop. It was too dangerous, she thought, her vision unfocused by the tears she refused to cry. She could feel her heart beating too fast, the air rasping on her chest, burning everything inside, leaving only a dark black hole. She entered her room without a thought and darted to the open window above her bed, where she finally stopped as the cold wind brushed her hair back, cooling her burning face and drying her uncried tears away. Outside the day was dying, a slow painful death as the sky was tinged in bright red, the same red that now painted all the small white houses down blow, houses where no one lived anymore, like empty shells that just stood there, waiting …... read more ❯

  Chapter 9 The Return Part 6 - A Queen's Decision Half the morning had already passed when the division into evacuation groups was finally concluded. The members of the Royal Council, with dark circles under bloodshot eyes and pale faces from lack of sleep, looked at each other satisfied with their night’s work. Carrying the list of the several groups, the assembled provisions and respective guards that would accompany them for the evacuation of Everlyn, the Prime Minister finally stood up and faced his countrymen. “Gentlemen, let’s get to work!” he told the others and they had just started leaving the room when Elipson barged in, breathless. “My Lords, I bring news.” she announced and tired smiles rapidly turned into apprehensive expressions. “The Northern Armies are on the move and it looks like they’re moving at full speed. If this goes on they’ll probably reach Everlyn’s borders before sunset. From what we could gather their... read more ❯

  Chapter 9 The Return Part 5 - A Terrible Witch The warmth of the sun touched her face. For a brief moment she almost thought she’d be late, and in the back of her mind she heard Kahor call her name. But then reality came rushing down on her and her golden eyes snapped open, blinking to get used to the daylight. “It’s morning!” she noticed, trying to sit up, but the arms surrounding her squeezed her gently, unwilling to release her. She watched him for a moment and a smile touched her lips as she thought he looked just like a young boy, sleeping peacefully and unworried. But right then more important things required her attention and the events of last night immediately killed her smile. “Elian? Wake up …” she called him and he finally opened his eyes, releasing her to rub his stiff neck. She took that chance to quickly stand up and... read more ❯
